  Green Tea Extract

Green tea has been used in China as a healthy, medicinal drink for approximately 5,000 years.

Oolong and black teas emerged as prosperity in China declined
Oolong and black teas are processed from oxidized tea leaves with some added aroma not present in fresh tea leaves. In ancient China, these teas were produced sporadically, by frying at high temperature the partially degraded oxidized tea leaves which could not meet the stringent timing requirement for green tea production.

Green, oolong, and black teas all come from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. What sets green tea apart is the way it is processed. Green tea leaves are steamed, which prevents the EGCG compound from being oxidized. By contrast, black and oolong tea leaves are made from fermented leaves, which results in the EGCG being converted into other compounds that are not nearly as effective in preventing and fighting various diseases.

Black tea has dark brown color. In black tea, most of the antioxidants are polymerized & inactivated, but the caffeine in the tea leaves is preserved. Therefore, the caffeine contents in black tea are higher than in green tea by weight. Black tea was primarily consumed by the minorities living in the northern and the western peripheral territories of the empire where preservation of the quality of green tea was difficult due to the long transportation time required to reach the market.

A grade of green tea good enough to maintain or to enhance their health in mind & body. The educated consumers want a green tea with no carcinogenic pesticides, with no heavy metal contaminations & containing a level of "active ingredients" sufficient for maintaining a healthy immune system & for reducing free radical damage in the body.

The tea plantation should be located in an area remote from industrial pollutants or heavy automobile exhaustion discharges because tea leaves are strong absorbents of environmental chemicals. The freshly plucked tea leaves should be heat-processed immediately and properly vacuum-packed with nitrogen flushing. The (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) contents as well as the pesticide and heavy metal residues in the dry tea leaves must be analyzed by an independent laboratory and certified to meet a set of minimum standards before release for marketing. In other words, green tea is a soothing beverage with health-protecting functions and should be treated as such in a serious manner.

The Miracle of Green Tea http://z.about.com"Better to be deprived of food for three days, than tea for one." (Ancient Chinese Proverb)
To sum up, here are just a few medical conditions in which drinking green tea is reputed to be helpful:
Catechins are responsible for the positive green tea side effects.

  1. Antioxidant – A daily consumption of 9 to 30 grams of tea leaves brewed properly in a total volume of 1,200 ml of hot water would be adequate for the purpose of maintaining a healthy immune system and for reducing free radical damage in the body.
  2. Cancer – Green tea reduces the risk of esophageal cancer in men & women by nearly sixty percent. Its benefits include potential cancer fighting & strong antioxidant effect that protects the body from the damaging effect of free radicals.

Green tea inhibits the growth of cancer cells.
The ingredient contained in the green tea extract are polyphenols. They are in form of flavanoids such as catechins & epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). These are very powerful antioxidants that helps in reducing the spread of certain types of cancer cells, this is by inducing death in cancer cell. These extracts are very rich in vitamin C or E.
This involves the control of breast, liver, lung and colon cancer among others.

  1. rheumatoid arthritis
  2. high cholesterol levels - Green tea lowers total cholesterol levels, as well as improving the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol to bad (LDL) cholesterol, reduces platelet aggregation, which is the clotting of blood cells, and lowers blood pressure. Lowers high triglycerides. help to promote the burning of fat in the body, as well as help to regulate blood sugar and insulin levels.
  3. cardiovascular disease - It has also been effective in lowering LDL cholesterol levels, and inhibiting the abnormal formation of blood clots. The latter takes on added importance when you consider that thrombosis (the formation of abnormal blood clots) is the leading cause of heart attacks and stroke.
  4. impaired immune function
  5. ease mental fatigue
  6. prevent plaque buildup on the teeth, and since the leaves contain a natural fluoride, may be helpful in preventing tooth decay. Just as its bacteria-destroying abilities can help prevent food poisoning, it can also kill the bacteria that causes dental plaque. Meanwhile, skin preparations containing green tea - from deodorants to creams - are starting to appear on the market.
  7. In Treating Brain Disorders - their natural ingredients may give potential cognitive health benefits. Regular consumption of either teas may help reduce the risk of age-related degenerative brain disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. The study's findings showed that the intake of both black and green tea extracts and Catechins strongly blocked the death of neurons.

Mechanism:
Oxidative stress resulting in reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation & inflammation play a pivotal role in the age-associated cognitive decline & neuronal loss in neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's (AD), Parkinson's (PD) & Huntington's diseases. One cardinal chemical pathology observed in these disorders is the accumulation of iron at sites where the neurons die. The buildup of an iron gradient in conjunction with ROS (superoxide, hydroxyl radical & nitric oxide) are thought to constitute a major trigger in neuronal toxicity & demise in all these diseases. Thus, promising future treatment of neurodegenerative diseases & aging depends on availability of effective brain permeable, iron-chelatable/radical scavenger neuroprotective drugs that would prevent the progression of neurodegeneration. Tea flavonoids (catechins) have been reported to possess potent iron-chelating, radical-scavenging and anti-inflammatory activities and to protect neuronal death in a wide array of cellular and animal models of neurological diseases.

  1. Green Tea Helps Promote Weight Loss - by increasing the metabolism of fats by the liver, inhibiting lipase (fat absorption enzyme) in the digestive tract, and providing a feeling of fullness.

Harmful Effects?
To date, the only negative side effect reported from drinking green tea is insomnia due to the fact that it contains caffeine. However, green tea contains less caffeine than coffee: there are approximately thirty to sixty mg. of caffeine in six - eight ounces of tea, compared to over one-hundred mg. in eight ounces of coffee.

Green tea has tremendous health benefits.*
The minimum of 90%in polyphenols and also 50% EGCG is highly recommended in a green tea extract while purchasing.
Researchers found that men who were given a combination of caffeine and green tea extract burned more calories than those given only caffeine or a placebo.

Green tea's many beneficial actions are considered to be anti-viral, antioxidant, diuretic, expectorant, timulant, stomachache, analgesic, astringent, caridiotonic, digestive, nervine, and carminative.

Side Effects of Green Tea Extracts
Green tea side effects are mostly positive. Any negative side effects of green tea would have to do with the caffeine content.

Normally, a 100 mg extract would contain only 2-4mg of caffeine, but some supplement manufacturers add as much as 500 mg of caffeine per capsule. That is particularly true in the case of the fat burners. A person that takes that kind of capsule is likely to experience nervousness, anxiety and insomnia. Those aren't green tea side effects. They are caused by caffeine.

They may be side effects of green tea drinking, if a person consumes too many cups per day. The caffeine-content per eight ounce cup varies between 10 and 80mg. Drinking more than five cups per day can start to cause problems. It can also raise your blood pressure and cause heart palpitations or irregular heartbeat. In other words, you have to be careful and limit consumption.

One of the side effects of green tea is a reduction of clotting. In most cases, this is beneficial. But, people with bleeding issues or those that are about to undergo surgery should not take the supplement or drink the beverage.

They should provide 80mg of Catechins per 100mg of the extract. Check the label. If the catechin content is not listed or it is lower than 80%, choose a better supplement.
